Slugs and snails can be a real challenge for gardeners. Especially in lovingly tended vegetable or plant beds, the damage caused by these uninvited guests is often considerable. An environmentally friendly and effective solution is the use of snail repellent fences. As an impassable barrier, it prevents the snails from entering the bed without the use of chemical agents.

Adavntages of snail repellent fences compared to poison

The use of snail fences offers numerous advantages over conventional control with poisons. Snail fences are not only sustainable, but also kind to the environment. They are the ideal choice for environmentally conscious gardeners looking for an effective solution. The main advantages include:

  • Environmental friendliness: snail fences do not require any chemical substances, thus avoiding pollution of soil, water and other living organisms. This not only protects the ecosystem, but also reduces the risk of secondary damage to other animals.
  • Targeted protection: While toxins can also affect beneficial animals, snail fences create a physical barrier that specifically keeps only snails away. This means that beneficial garden inhabitants and other animals remain unharmed.
  • Long-term solution: Once installed, snail fences offer permanent protection. The high-quality construction made of galvanised sheet steel ensures a long service life.In addition, your fence can be extended or adapted to new bed shapes at any time. The longitudinal panels of different lengths and the inner and outer corners make it possible to frame many bed shapes.
  • Safety: Unlike poisonous substances, snail fences pose no danger to pets, children or other garden inhabitants. The well thought-out design minimises the risk of injury.

Installation in the garden

Installing a snail fence is simple, but should be done with care to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Installation steps:
  1. Prepare the soil:
Level and loosen the area.
  2. Optionally mark the fence line.
Mark the course with a taut cord, including corners.
  3. Set outside and inside corners.
Place corner elements first to ensure alignment.
  4. Insert longitudinal sheets Insert the sheet edges overlapping into each other: Insert the lower edge of the new sheet behind the upper edge of the previous one. Press the joint firmly together.
  5. Insert the fence at least 10 cm deep. Press the bottom edge of the sheet approx. 10 cm into the ground (use a spade to help if necessary).
  6. Complete the frame. Connect all sheets along the line until the fence is closed.
  7. Attach securing hooks: one securing hook in the centre of each sheet to ensure stability.

Regular checks of the slug fence and any extensions will ensure that your garden remains permanently protected from slugs.

  • In the first few weeks, you will need to check again, as there may still be larvae in the bed from the time without the fence, from which slugs can hatch.
  • In the area around the snail fence, grasses or shrubs should be placed in such a way that they do not provide a climbing aid for the snails over the fence.
